By owning and caring for your traditional property, you are helping to protect it for the future, preserving Stirling’s nationally significant historic environment. Looking after an older property is not simple, tackling repairs can be a daunting task, which is why the not-for-profit Traditional Buildings Health Check scheme was set up.

We are here to help you look after your property, assisting you with diagnosing problems, planning the next steps in maintaining your building and applying for grant funding.

Why become a Traditional Buildings Health Check member?

Older buildings demand careful thought and attention. Maintaining and repairing traditional buildings requires the input of experienced and skilled contractors and professionals who understand their materials and methods of construction.

Without preventative maintenance or the right repairs, small problems in older buildings can quickly grow into bigger problems.

Traditional Buildings Health Check offers advice to help you understand your building’s current condition and plan for future maintenance and repair. Becoming a member of the TBHC will give you year-round access to our services and support.

Membership costs

Membership of the scheme starts from:

  • One Year: £45
  • Two years: £80

(First subsidised inspection & report can be booked for £175*)

  • Inspection package: £195 for one year’s membership and your first subsidised property inspection*

​​​​​​​(New members can get £25 off their first inspection by signing up for our Inspection Package. This special membership package covers one year’s membership to the scheme and the first subsidised property inspection and condition report.)

The inspection package is easy to sign up for, simply follow the link below to our online membership form and select Membership package at the payment stage.

* There is an additional charge for larger and complex buildings, such commercial or public buildings, large detached houses and religious buildings. These types of buildings involve additional inspection and report writing time we will asses the additional fee on a case by case basis.

Membership advice service

  • Year-round building care and advice.

Subsidised property inspections

  • Impartial building inspection, using our drone service where possible.
  • Comprehensive and clear condition report, highlighting priorities.
  • Follow-up meeting to help plan the next steps.
  • Schedule of repairs, summarising the planned work for contractors (additional charges apply).

Traditional Building Repair Grants

Traditional building grants to assist members to undertake property repairs.

2022 repair grants funding is currently limited to properties within the Stirling City Boundary and Bridge of Allan.


Who’s eligible to join as a member?

Owners of any property type are eligible as long as their building is of traditional construction – built before 1919, has solid masonry walls and uses traditional materials like stone and slate.

It may be your home, business or a public or community building. It doesn’t need to be in a Conservation Area or Listed, but it must be in the Stirling City boundary, in Bridge of Allan, Dunblane or Blairlogie.

The Health Check scheme is open to buildings in single ownership as well as those in multiple occupancy, such as tenements. To get the most out of the scheme and our grants programme, we recommend that all residents in multiple occupancy buildings become members. Individual tenement flat owners can arrange an inspection, but grant funding is only open to TBHC members.
